Central Market, San José

During a long weekend from La Paz Community School, we traveled to San José to visit the infamous Central Market. The market, a bustling block-long indoor market chock full of vendors selling everything from kitchen cookware to fish heads to ground spices and touristy Pura Vida  hats, shirts, and magnets.

Fruit and vegetables were fresh and sold in bulk, as were dried beans and herbs used for cooking and homeopathic remedies.

We were two weeks away from Halloween when we toured the market so costumes were prominently displayed and - wow - were they a strange combination of masks and outfits.

The diversity of items - food and household - sold were amazing. In just a 10 meter walk, you smell roasting coffee beans, fried fish, and casados.

Don't leave the market without enjoying the infamous sorbetera de Lolo Mora, founded in 1901.  This joint serves one kind of ice cream,  similar to a gelato, in only one flavor that includes nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and cloves.
